An Introduction to Artificial Intelligence (AI) in Oral Medicine and Oral Pathology
Course Description:
This session will introduce you to the fundamentals of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and provide you with examples of applications of AI in Oral Medicine, Oral Pathology, and Oral Radiology. You will also be given the opportunity to challenge the AI in head-to-head diagnostic challenges of pathologic conditions of the oral cavity.
Learning Objectives:
1. Be able to provide a definition for Artificial Intelligence (AI)
2. Be able to recognize the main components of AI Classification
3. Be able to provide examples of Applications of AI in Medicine, Pathology, and Dentistry

About the Speaker:
Dr. Ahmed Sultan is Assistant Professor in the Department of Oncology & Diagnostic Sciences
at the University of Maryland School of Dentistry. Dr. Sultan graduated from Trinity College Dublin, Ireland with honors degrees of a BA and a dental degree (BDS). Dr. Sultan completed his Oral Medicine Residency at Harvard and is board certified by the American Board of Oral Medicine and is a Fellow in Oral Medicine of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh. Dr. Sultan then completed his PhD in Mycobiology and an Oral & Maxillofacial Pathology Residency Program at the University of Maryland School of Dentistry.
Dr. Sultan is currently a diplomate of the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology and a fellow of the American Academy of Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology. He maintains dual board certification and is active in his role as Co-Director of the Oral Medicine Programs at the University of Maryland Marlene and Stewart Greenebaum Comprehensive Cancer Center and at the University of Maryland School of Dentistry. He is an Oral Pathologist for Oral Pathology Consultants, located at the University of Maryland School of Dentistry. He is currently the Program Director for the Oral & Maxillofacial Pathology Residency Program at the University of Maryland School of Dentistry. He runs an active research lab focused on the use of artificial intelligence, specifically deep learning for image segmentation of Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology. In addition, he is the Director of the Division of Artificial Intelligence Research at the University of Maryland School of Dentistry and the Division Chief of Diagnostic Sciences. His work as author or co-author has been published in 78 journal articles and he is PI or Co-I on several institutional and extramural grants.
